  2. StrattonΓÇÖs inverting lenses 
  3. yield illusory motion of a 
  4. scene.  When Stratton turned 
  5. his head from the position 
  6. shown on the left to the 
  7. position shown on the right, 
  8. the retinal images of stationary 
  9. objects shifted in a direction 
  10. opposite to their normal 
  11. direction.

  13. Around the turn of the century, 
  14. George Stratton, a psychologist 
  15. at the University of California 
  16. at Berkeley, performed an 
  17. experiment that is still being 
  18. discussed and disputed. For 
  19. eight days in succession, 
  20. Stratton wore lenses mounted 
  21. in a tube in front of one of his 
  22. eyes that inverted and reversed 
  23. the images that reached his 
  24. retina. He was interested in 
  25. discovering whether or not the 
  26. scene that appeared upside 
  27. down would eventually appear 
  28. right side up if he continued to 
  29. wear the lenses, an issue we 
  30. will take up in Chapter 8. What 
  31. is of interest here is StrattonΓÇÖs 
  32. observation that objects viewed 
  33. through the lenses appeared to 
  34. shift in direction in an 
  35. abnormal way when he moved. 
  36. At first, a stationary scene 
  37. appeared to move in the 
  38. direction of his own movement 
  39. and at a faster rate. We can 
  40. conclude from this fact that, 
  41. when there is an abnormal 
  42. change in direction during an 
  43. observerΓÇÖs movement, things 
  44. will appear to move. Position 
  45. constancy is lost. More recent 
  46. experiments indicate that the 
  47. same is true if the rate at 
  48. which things change their 
  49. direction is altered during the 
  50. observerΓÇÖs movement, even if 
  51. the direction of movement 
  52. itself is not altered.
